About Belfast East

Music and Art based programs with East Belfast communities working with artists representing many different cultures, aiming to enhance cultural relationships and artistic value within the area

Beyond Skin is an organisation using arts, music and media to assist cultural relations and since being established in January 2004, the organisation has been very active across Northern Ireland running various cross-cultural programs and projects.

Beyond Skin's previous main office was located in East Belfast, and through discussions with local communities, individuals, arts organisations, and council and government units, Beyond Skin in 2007 set out to establish a focused unit specifically for the East Belfast area.

The Belfast East programme is managed by Beyond Skin and is primarily funded through Belfast City Council (culture and arts unit), working with core partners, arts organisations, businesses and social enterprises that are based or operate in the East Belfast area.

Phase I of the Belfast East programme was completed in July 2009 with Phase II due for completion September 2010 focusing on researching and developing links through arts & media with groups on a global scale, identifying commonalities and diversity that is present socially, economically and environmentally within a community.

An additional element to the Belfast East programme is 'creative legacies' an Peace III initiative in partnership with Belfast city Council exploring the diversity of Belfast history and heritage enabling the development of the arts that reflects individualistic and united culture within East Belfast, providing a legacy that can benefit all inhabitants of Belfast City and the wider community.

This dedicated website will keep you up to date with all activities within the programme .

Ms Denis Iliescu is the project manager for Belfast East.

Working with the people in the community, Belfast East can communicate their message through interactive, creative methods.

We understand in these times that there is a wide spread insecurity within communities with the introduction of other cultures.

Belfast East aims to reassure that there is nothing to fear and that through understanding, finding common grounds and sharing, we realise that there is essentially no difference between us, no underlying alternative motives - we are all members of the same community - we only need to have patience, tolerance and an open mind.
