08.05.2010 | Beyond Skin Global

Beyond Skin GlobalOn World Fair Trade Day 8th May 2010 Beyond Skin launched the new Beyond Skin Global website and brand Creatively linking Global Development Issues to Race Relations, the website will be a central resource for Beyond Skin global initiatives/programmes and partnership projects and campaigns.

In 2008 Beyond Skin set out to use music as a tool to link global development issues to race relations in a schools programme funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). The programme was very successful and due to Beyond Skin's growing global network (thanks to Homely Planet radio) we have developed a Global Development Education initiative.

This involves a schools' radio and music project funded by DFID, global exchange projects and various global campaign projects (such as Sudan365).

In 2009 Beyond Skin became the first organisation in Ireland to become members of UNOY (United Network of Young Peacebuilders). Beyond Skin aims to develop exchange projects with other global members of UNOY, as well as with youth groups in Northern Ireland using music, arts and media.

The Beyond Skin Global brand will soon be present on all Beyond Skin websites and online networks providing a link to the Beyond Skin Global website.

Beyond Skin would wish to thank the Centre For Global Education and Alexandra De La Torre for their support and guidance over the past few years that has resulted in this development of the Beyond Skin Global vision; and also a massive thank-you to Sinful Design for the BSG brand and website design

15.03.2010 | Action Week Against Racism!

Action Week Against Racism! As part of the European-Wide Action Week against Racism 13-21 March 2010, Elmgrove Primary School in East Belfast will be hosting a music performance and Homely Planet radio forum with pupils from Knockloughrim Primary School.

In 2009 P6 & P7 pupils from Knockloughrim embarked on a song-writing project together, exploring the structure of 'song' - literally the Rhyme & Reason for writing! They discovered that music can be a powerful medium for expressing our feelings and thoughts about important issues.

At the time of the project, two soldiers and one policeman were shot in Northern Ireland. Pupils were baffled by these events and confused as to what was happening. It was this which inspired them to express their feelings by writing a song about it. To convey their message: that we do not want to go back to the troubles that our parents experienced in the past. They wanted to show that despite religion and background, we all need to learn how to get along and value each other.

The outcome was the song 'We can't go back'.

The recorded radio programme from the Elmgrove/Knockloughrim session will be available here soon!
