The (short) Motion Project story

2001 Jamie Catto from the band Faithless and producer Duncan Bridgeman travelled the world to explore the things that unite us all and showing how these common traits far outweigh our superficial differences.
A film '1 Giant Leap' documented the journey and fused music, words, sounds and images from a diversity of musicians, storytellers, authors, artists and thinkers from many different cultures. www.1glni.net

2004 Belfast, Beyond Skin, a new organisation addressing racism & sectarianism saw the positive energy that 1 Giant Leap could reflect on Northern Ireland. As a result a series of events dealing with the racial and cultural issues in Northern Ireland, where held surrounding the 1 Giant Leap cinema screenings.

Event organisers, 'Beyond Skin' and friends within the music scene, knew the potential was there for Belfast to have their own Giant Leap themed project. In September 04, the concept of the project 'Motion' began to take shape. Inspired from a quote, from Duncan Bridgeman on the making of 1 Giant Leap a difference would be focusing on local unknown talent. "Before we left on our six month journey around the world, we did a little list of all our heroes and favourite people we wanted to work with … but what we completely underestimated was how great all the people who aren't famous are"

Three months later, December 04, recording began of the 'Motion' CD, February 2006 it was released and 1 year later Motion had developed info a touring program of workshops & performances. In April 2007 Motion2Music ltd was established as a social enterprise to develop and manage projects using music to address racism & sectarianism. www.motion2music.com

One of the developments was of a unique workshop format called an 'interactive music experience' or iME. The IME has now become a recognised format and term with government units and education groups.

Using the same format as the original Motion recording the concept for young people was developed into 'youth in motion', which has become a regional recording project. www.yim-ni.org

Other projects include development education programs with aid charity 'Children in Crossfire' and positive learning programs in partnership with life coaching company 'Soul Ambition'.

Development of the Motion Project has lead to the 'Homely Planet' initiative, a inter(net) cultural radio station for Northern Ireland. www.homelyplanet.org

At the time of the 'Journey of Equals' film release over 60 musicians representing 19 countries have been involved with the Motion Project. www.themotionproject.net
